Taking it slow
We're taking another zero day here in Waynesboro, VA. Just to keep you all updated, we've decided to ditch our plan of reaching Katahdin by August 8th, and are gonna take it slower so that we can enjoy ourselves a bit more and treat our bodies a little better. We'll just go as far as we can get by that date and return later to finish someday. Trying to complete the trail in 4 months was pretty tough, especially having to do 21-25 miles a day, and didn't leave much time to stop and smell the roses. Now we understand why people take 6-7 months to finish. We would pretty much just wake up, hike, eat, hike, sleep, hike, etc. So we've decreased our average daily mileage to about 15 miles. This next week as we go through Shenandoah National Park, we're going to go even slower to try to put some weight back on Mike. Thanks again for all of your love, support, and prayers. It's actually become quite fun again!

Glad your hiking your own hike and doing it the way you really want to. You've got plenty of sweet times ahead of you and are going to leave a pretty awesome section to finish up down the road. My quick math with your desired pace puts you somewhere in VT come August and that's an awesome time on the trail. I love you guys and am stoked for your next 2 months.
ReplyDeleteCan we send you stuff at the park? Or anyplace you might be to get packages in the next few days?
ReplyDeleteMike and Hannah,
ReplyDeleteI got your phone message. I looked at an AT map, and it appears that you will cross US 15 near Fayetteville/Chambersburg, PA which is about 30 minutes from me. I am about 90 minutes from Harpers Ferry, WV. I am to try to meet you wherever is best for you. My off days are Wed and Thur if you want a lengthy battlefield tour; otherwise we can squeeze a couple hour tour on a day that I work. To help you with planning, here is my rough schedule. Sat 13: 1p-10p, 14: 10p-7p, 15: 8a-5p, 16: 8a-5p, 17&18: off, 19: 8a-5p, Sat 20: 1p-10p.
Gloria Chandler is right behind you. Watch out.
ReplyDeleteScripture for today: The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)
ReplyDeleteBe well, kids.
It's good to slow it down I think. You're mentality was strong going into it. I think that's what got you this far. I'm just glad you guys didn't run into Ol' Pete, the Appalachian moocher. that 99 yr. old hobo would have sucked your food supply dry for sure. so cunning.
ReplyDeleteProud of you two - for what you've already accomplished, and for your willingness and ability to "switch gears" when necessary. Know you've gone through some disappointment and pain to get to this point. May God bless and ancourage you each day with a special message. "The heavens declare the Glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge"
ReplyDeleteMiss you guys keep the updates coming if you can. Be safe and have a great time. Mike where can I send you a Lou's pizza (with a slab of sausage that you can get stuck in your windpipe)? Just kidding! Love you!
